To help reassure employees it was safe to come back, and it would remain so, Serco wanted a way of checking if any employee had symptoms of COVID-19 prior to them entering the main office space and potentially spreading it to other people.
They wanted a solution that would work alongside existing social distancing measures and be non-invasive, contact-less and results delivered with a high degree of accuracy within an efficient time frame.
The OCS solution
OCS introduced a Body Temperature Measurement solution as a way of detecting and monitoring human body temperature. One of the main symptoms of COVID-19 is a fever, so the ability to use camera technology to instantly measure the temperature of everyone passing it provided Serco with the non-contact solution they desired. It was also able to process people immediately, reducing any queues of doing it manually, whilst keeping in line with Government social distancing legislation.
The system provides an accuracy of +/- 0.3 degrees at a read range of three metres utilising their blackbody radiator to give a reference point of 35 degrees. This met with Serco’s requirement to have an accurate solution.
The alerting temperature for the camera was set to 37.8 degrees, which was recommended at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic as the temperature to be aware of. The camera was mounted three metres away from the entrance and blackbody as per the manufacturer guidelines.
The camera was connected back to an AI network recorder, where it was displayed on a 27” monitor by the reception desk. The receptionist monitors and view people entering the site, and if an alert for a raised temperature was generated, she would act immediately and apply the Serco policy of not allowing anyone with potential symptoms of COVID-19 into the main workspace.
What is means to Serco
Implementing the Body Temperature Measurement solution has allowed Serco to demonstrate to its employees that they value their health and safety concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides them with reassurance that colleagues entering the building do not have a fever, one of the three main symptoms, and therefore helps reduce the fear of returning to the work. This non-invasive technology compliments the other initiatives around social distancing that Serco have introduced.
